What We Test For

Catchment systems and private wells use different testing panels. Your report includes the laboratory results for the selected panel.

Catchment testing panel

  • Total Coliform & E. coli: Bacterial testing for the collected water sample.
  • Turbidity: A measurement of water clarity.
  • Lead & Copper: Measurements of these metals in the sampled water.

Private well testing panel

  • Total Coliform & E. coli: Bacterial testing for the collected water sample.
  • Nitrate & Nitrite: Measurements reported as nitrogen, with the combined concentration considered alongside the individual results.
  • pH: A measurement of acidity or alkalinity.
  • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): A measurement of dissolved minerals and salts.

Reference levels and test methods need to be considered together when reviewing results. A laboratory result reported as “non-detect” should be read with its detection or reporting limit.

How the Testing Process Works

1. Schedule your appointment

Select a service and provide the property location and water source. For a real estate transaction, obtain your lender’s written testing requirements before scheduling.

2. Prepare the property

Arrange access through you, your agent, or a lockbox. Electricity and the water pump should be on, with clear access to the kitchen sink or agreed sampling point.

3. We collect and deliver the samples

We collect water on site using appropriate collection and handling procedures, usually from a point after the home’s water treatment system, such as the kitchen tap. Samples are delivered to a local analytical laboratory for the selected testing panel. A dedicated appointment is required for proper handling.

4. Receive your results

Keep the report for your records or share it with your real estate agent, lender, or other professional. The laboratory results describe the sample collected at your property.

Testing for Real Estate & Lender Requirements

Buying, selling, or refinancing a property with catchment or well water? Obtain the lender’s written requirements before scheduling so we can confirm whether our service is appropriate.

VA, FHA, USDA, and individual lender requirements vary. Some lenders require particular tests, sampling procedures, or laboratory qualifications. A standard testing panel does not automatically satisfy every lender or loan program.

Our Big Island Service Area

Serving Hilo, Puna, the Hāmākua Coast, Waimea, Volcano, and surrounding areas. The laboratory testing prices above apply from Volcano to Waimea.

Outside this area, the additional travel charge is $3.00 per mile from Waimea Airport or Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, whichever is closer.

Simple On-Site pH Testing

On-Site Water pH Test — $100

Plus 4.712% Hawaiʻi GET. A quick on-site pH reading for catchment water, private well water, or a household tap.

  • One accessible water-testing location.
  • Handheld probe reading provided during the appointment.
  • Approximately 30 minutes on site.

This service measures pH only. It does not determine whether water is safe to drink and does not satisfy VA, FHA, USDA, lender, or regulatory testing requirements.

pH-test service area: Honomū to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Travel outside this area is charged at $3 per mile.

Your appointment, location, and total price will be confirmed by phone. An invoice will be emailed after confirmation.

Testing Limitations & Important Notes

Water testing provides results only for the contaminants or water-quality characteristics analyzed at the time the sample is collected. It does not establish that the water is free from every possible contaminant.

Testing panels, laboratory reference levels, and lender requirements serve different purposes. Review the report’s methods and reporting limits when comparing results with a reference level. Testing is not a guarantee of continued water quality or loan approval.
